Recipe. Healing Stewed Apples

This is a great example of using foods for therapeutic application. This recipe helps support gastrointestinal function (gut health). The humble ingredients contribute to bringing down inflammation, support the mucosal lining of the intestinal tract, increases beneficial microflora (healthy gut bugs) and improves digestion and elimination

Ingredients

  • 6 Bramlely Apples (or apples of choice - preferably organic). Peeled, cored and sliced. Note: if reactive to apples, they can be substituted for pears.

  • Up to 1/2 cup raisins/sultanas (for sweetness and fibre)

  • 1/2 cup water

  • 2 tsp Cinnamon

Directions

  1. Put all ingredients in a covered, heavy-bottomed pan.

  2. Cook on stovetop for 15 minutes, stirring regularly. Cook until soft with rough shapes, no longer identifiable as apple slices. The colour should be russet brown with the cinnamon.

  3. Spoon stewed apples into ramekins.

  4. Cover and store in the fridge.

These can be eaten warm or cold. Keeps for 3-4 days refrigerated. May be frozen and reheated as required.

Serve with organic natural yoghurt, 6-8 blueberries, 4-5 almonds in their skins, 1 tsp of manuka honey if required.
